The Spiritual Side Of Gambling - Using Your Mind To Play Tough

There are many skilled athletes who perform magnificently
during training and then blow it when it comes time to perform
for real. When they are on stage they just can't deliver
the goods. This is a common problem and one that often determines
who will succeed in a big way and who will not.
This is also a problem of many gamblers. When they are
watching others play they feel like they know just how it
should be done. But when it is their turn to put up or shut
up they get tensed up and stiff and aren’t able to
trust their instincts or intuition. In fact there are many
otherwise competent players who under stress suffer from
a drop in their abilities and skills, a phenomenon that significantly
reduces their chances of winning.
There is a solution to this problem and it has two parts:
- You have to comprehend what is intuition and the role
that it plays in one’s life.
- You need to increase your awareness of the tools and
techniques that you can use to increase your control of
your intuitive abilities.
Although it may not be that easy to live life guided by
your intuitive ability, if you can begin to understand its
importance you will truly benefit.
There are many philosophers, such as Descarte for an example,
who perceive of humans as being dualistic creatures, consisting
of both physical and mental natures. In the model that follows,
humans are also defined as being dualistic in nature. This
model sees humans as having the ability to function at two
levels, the physical and the spiritual. With this model we
can consider a new aspect of living, the spiritual. It provides
a means for taking into consideration a board variety of
feelings and thoughts, those that are shared by all, but
which most individuals seem to lack the ability to understand.
We humans all consist of two natures:
1. The physical nature – this includes the body which is driven by the
five senses and which contains the brain. The brain reacts when we feel something
from our environment through one of these five senses. This is experienced
as thoughts.
2. The spiritual nature – this is experienced as
thoughts in our mind that are not generated by the external
environment through our senses. These are thoughts that come
through an entirely different process, by means of the subconscious.
Our actions and the decisions that we make in life are
directly linked with an internal process that takes place
within our mind. This process combines information acquired
through two inputs, those thoughts that are generated as
a reaction to stimuli that activate our senses, and those
that are not generated by such stimuli but occur from within
our subconscious.
An ongoing dynamic occurs between these two forces as each
endeavors to become the sole source of ideas that generate
the decisions that we make.
When we experience fear or stress, it is the physical senses that dominate
and that force the decision-making process. When we are more relaxed and less
tense, it is the spiritual side of our mind that dominates our thoughts and
expresses itself. This is seen in the much more improved performances that
we are able to give at such times. This spiritual nature of the mind becomes
the source of our wisdom and superior performance. Those who operate more from
their spiritual side are considered to be wiser and usually experience better
results in their lives. That is why you need to learn to let the spiritual
side of your nature dominate when you play.
Controlling your thought level or the level of thought
activity in your mind allows you to accomplish this. Techniques
that are available for accomplishing this include the practice
of meditation, mental control and controlled thought visualization.
These techniques help you to remove useless and unnecessary
thoughts from your mind. Once you have accomplished the ability
to empty your mind of noncreative thoughts, you can put in
place a kind of screening process by which you allow only
those thoughts that are not generated by the senses to enter
your mind. This will allow those thoughts that derive from
your intuition to come in and to have free reign. This will
allow you a surprising level of success in your play.
