128 backgammon players will meet in the Bahamas this month to compete in the first ever international backgammon tournament. Organized by Party Gammon.com, seats to the tournament have been snapped up by both online backgammon fans and seasoned backgammon professionals. The competition also features the largest ever prize for a backgammon tournament with the winner guaranteed to pocket $500,000. A further $500,000 will be shared between the highest placed finalists.
The event, which is being held at Paradise Island's Atlantis Resort from the 21st to 25th January, has attracted some of the world's top players. American number one Nack Ballard will join 2006 world champion Philip Vischjager from Holland to compete for the top spot along with national backgammon champions from Chile, Japan and Argentina.
However, for those online backgammon fans desperate to make it to the popular event, there are still a few last places up for grabs. Party Gammon.com is offering several last qualifiers for the tournament for an initial buy-in of just $2.50. The prize awarded to the highest performing backgammon players includes $800 spending money, a $10,000 buy-in for the tournament's main event and five nights accommodation at the prestigious Atlantis Resort. Players who make it into the finals will also have the honor of appearing on the small screen, thanks to the organizer's deal with local television networks who will record the action for later screening sessions.
According to a Party Gammon spokesperson, the tournament has generated record interest. "Places for the tournament are being snapped up fast and we anticipate that we'll soon be sold out,” he said. “There are a few places left, however, so it is not too late to book your flight to the Bahamas. The quality of players in the field is very high. It will be intriguing to see how the online qualifiers get on against the world champions."
