New York State County Gets Tough on Holiday Gambling
It's the season to be jolly but not for one unlucky sports betting operator. According to reports in Associated Press this week, over 17 arrests have been made in Suffolk County of New York State this holiday period, with one arrest even leading to the exposure of a drugs network. In a statement made by Thomas Spota, District Attorney for Suffolk County, 14 individuals face charges of promoting gambling, with a further three charged with conspiracy to possess marijuana. All 17 individuals allegedly involved with a lucrative gambling ring are scheduled to be arraigned in March.
Spota told media that over $165,000 each week was being netted by the illegal gambling ring; most of this deriving from sports bets on professional sporting events. Over $8.6 million per year was sent to the gambling ring's headquarters in Costa Rica. Surveillance activities on the gambling ring also led to the drug bust which yielded over 100 pounds of marijuana. Suffolk County along with its neighbor Nassau is more commonly known as Long Island. Suffolk County itself is the most eastern county in the New York Metropolitan area and New York State.
