Bodog to Sponsor Antiguan Youth Projects
Cynical opponents of the online gambling industry may have been forced to bite their tongues this week following reports that online gaming firm Bodog is to support a series of local charity projects. Focusing on the local Antiguan community, Bodog CEO Calvin Ayre told media that the Calvin Ayre Foundation will be supporting two initiatives designed to advance the conditions of local Antiguan youth. "We're extremely motivated to build on the educational needs of the local Antiguan youth, and we look forward to carrying out many more projects in this area in the years to come," Ayre said. The first initiative to receive the backing of Bodog is the construction of an eating facility at a local secondary school. This will benefit students participating in Antigua and Barbuda's government sponsored meal program. Primary and junior secondary schoolchildren will be able to eat their lunch in a clean and safe seating area as a result of the project. In addition to ensuring that basic food necessities are provided to students, the Calvin Ayre Foundation is planning to construct a safety fence around the school grounds. Busy roads and the school's close proximity to a local prison have raised safety concerns amongst students, teachers and parents who support fencing the school for student safety reasons. Dr Errol Cort, Finance Minister of Antigua & Barbuda, told media that: "Calvin Ayre had stepped forward to sponsor T.N. Kirnon's $203 000 school meals facility, as the secondary school prepares to become a part of the national program."
