Poker Players Face Off at World Poker Tour Champs
Las Vegas is the place to be this week following the opening of the fourth World Poker Tour Championships. Held at the Bellagio Hotel and Casino, this year’s event features no less than 606 contestants and a prize pool exceeding 15 million dollars. By Day 4 of the competition, the field has been reduced to 74 of the best poker players in the world all competing for the first prize of $3.8 million. The original starting line-up featured players from over 40 different countries, cementing the World Poker Tour Championships as the world’s premier poker event.
According to Steve Lipscomb, founder and chief executive officer of the WPT World Championship, the competition is the toughest in the world to win. “At a cost of $25,500 to get to the table, you have to be a very accomplished poker player,” says Lipscomb. “You've either built a very solid bankroll or you've outlasted thousands in satellite tournaments. No doubt this final table will be a cliffhanger." The final to decide the competition will be played on April 24 and will feature six players. The WPT World Championship crowns the WPT's fourth season, bringing the total prize money for the 17 tournaments to $85,120,000.
