Spanish Fans Welcome World Poker Tour to Barcelona
Spanish poker fans were given something to smile about this week following an announcement from the World Poker Tour that Spain will be included in the sixth season. The popular tourist destination of Barcelona will play host to the event, with the bulk of the action scheduled to take place at Casino Barcelona.
The announcement comes on the back of a deal between the World Poker Tour and Spanish group Grup Peralada. It is expected that further deals will be finalized between the groups if the Spanish leg of the World Poker Tour goes well. Future poker ventures in Spain are already under discussion, along with plans to include South America and Portugal in the poker action.
The deal to bring the World Poker Tour was announced to media by the group's CEO Steve Lipscomb, who referred to it as “a very important move for us as we continue to expand our business in the European market.”
His comments were echoed by Oliver Zugel, casino division chief for Grup Peralada. “It will create a new standard for premium, televised poker events in Europe and lay the groundwork for an Iberian tour involving other leading casinos in Spain and Portugal” Zugel told media.
The events at Casino Barcelona will be televised along with the rest of the World Poker Tour for the fourteenth time.
