Anti Gambling Group Lobbies Outside The Law In Richmond, Arizona
The city officials are not amused, and will not condone or allow the lobbies that appear to have grown out of control.
In Richmond, in the state of Arizona city workers have started removing signs that according to city officials were placed by the anti gambling group on public property. The group, called Stop the Mega Casino, however dismisses those claims, stating that they outsourced the distribution of the signs to a third party.
The anti gambling signs were placed in public areas, aiming to convince members of the city council to vote negatively for a new casino resort in the area. 2010, being an election year, the votes can have a large effect on their job security.
According to city officials the signs are not especially targeted, and claim it is part of a routine check for inappropriate signs, which are due for removal. To the city, this is just another example of a movement, that broke the law to get their point across.
Tim Higares, a manager of the Richmond police stated that anything placed in public areas or on public property gets removed. They just happen to be a lot of casino signs.
The matter is far from over, as the Band of Pomo Indians seeks to obtain recognition for the land on a federal level, and if that happens the city will have to vote on whether to allow or deny the creation of a new casino on the land.
