Britain Prepares for First All-Women Poker Tournament
British female poker fans are lining up for a place in Britain’s first ever all-women poker championships. Supported by the Stanley Leisure Group, the event is targeting the increasing numbers of women who are making the transition from poker at online casinos to the live game. The tournament is being hosted by the largest casino in Britain, Birmingham’s Star City. The casino’s director, Mark Ross, said the decision to support the championship was automatic. "Women's championships started in America three or four years ago and we felt it was time to start them here,” Ross said. "A lot of women are starting online and then deciding they want to play with real people. I think women who have never been in a casino before but have played with friends or online will enter the championship." According to the Telegraph News, playing poker is becoming more acceptable in female circles despite the game’s male-dominated past. "The talents required of a poker player are traditionally male traits: aggression, the ability to lie and hide your emotions,” a recent article in the newspaper read. “But women are finally breaking into the world of poker and some are beating the men at their own game." The article in the Telegraph News also focused on the poker experience and the recent success of women at the game. The increased interest in poker from female players was highlighted by a recent YouGov poll which revealed that women constituted between 30 to 40 percent of players at online casinos.
