China's Government Wages War on Online Gambling
According to Chinese media reports, the Chinese government has prosecuted over 350 online gaming cases and has questioned and detained 700s suspects in relation to related offenses. The Ministry of Public Security has issued a statement blaming computer hacking, viruses, online gambling and pornography for causing social problems in the country and inhibiting the growth of a healthy online environment.
A spokesman for the Ministry added that the government will continue to focus its efforts on illegal internet activity, and has set up state operated web sites to encourage citizens to report online crimes. The Ministry also intends to co-operate with other government departments to increase internet awareness amongst Chinese citizens in order to “establish a healthy, orderly and harmonious Internet environment.”
