The URU identity authentication facility has boosted revenues for the GB Group this year. The enterprise, run by GB and British Telecom, has become commonplace in the online gambling industry, which has substantially boosted GB Group’s annual revenues.

The firm’s sales director, Miles Carroll, has cited the growing need for identity verification in the gaming industry as key to the URU’s success "Identity verification and the battle against internet fraudsters is a vital task for the e-gaming industry, particularly ahead of the possible 2007 implementation of licenses discussed in the 2005 UK Gambling Act," Carroll said. “We want to help the industry face the possible regulatory challenges ahead. Good social responsibility and control of age is good for business.”
The growth of online terminology has also helped to increase GB Group’s market presence. Carroll compared the art of internet research, commonly known as “googling” to “URU-ing” which is now used to describe an online identification check. Carroll also pointed out that URU has an overwhelming 80 percent market share in Great Britain, with the nearest competitor holding only a 7 percent share.

According to GB Group’s chief executive Richard Law, the firm is predicted to double in size every two years until 2010. “In a recent study conducted on behalf of GB by Manchester Business School, it was estimated that the market for electronic identity checks in the UK will grow to over 300 million electronic checks per annum by 2010 and be worth more than GBP 200 million (US$368 million),” Law said.
