Online Gambling Proposal Receives 42 Votes of Support

While online gambling remains a controversial issue in U.S. government circles, a recent proposal by Nevada Rep Jon Porter, and co-sponsored by Shelley Berkeley and Jim Gibbons, also of Nevada, has gained substantial support from politicians. Porter’s Internet Gambling Study Commission Act proposes Congress elect a committee to conduct a full investigation into the world of online gaming before taking any measures to legislate against the industry in the U.S.

The proposal has gained support from no less than 42 politicians and has been widely praised by both the online and land-based gambling industries, along with the American Gaming Association (AGA).
If successful, the legislation could result in the first ever political study of online gambling. According to Porter, an in-depth understanding of the industry is crucial before Congress makes any decisions about its future. By establishing a bipartisan, independent study commission, we'll make sure we have all of the facts laid out on the table before considering any possible next steps,” Porter said.

Support for the legislation was also expressed by co-sponsor Jim Gibbons, who pointed out that “gambling has extended into new outlets and can be easily accessed through the Internet. In order to address this growing trend, and preserve the integrity and fairness of the games, we must conduct a thoughtful examination of the availability of online gaming,” he said.
Gibbons also told media that he believes “…restricting the online gaming industry without fully reviewing the potential negative impacts would be a knee-jerk reaction. I commend Congressman Porter for his leadership on this issue and am confident that this legislation will provide a thorough evaluation of Internet gaming.”
The legislation seeks to establish an independent Commission comprised of nine appointed members, which will be tasked with conducting a comprehensive study of internet gambling, including current U.S. gambling legislation.
