Answers Sought for Reasons Behind Party Gaming's US talks
UK media have been busy speculating on the circumstances surrounding online gambling firm Party Gaming's current talks with U.S. authorities. Last week the company disclosed to media sources that it is involved in ongoing discussions with U.S lawmakers concerning its legal position in the country.
The talks are thought to be an attempt to clean up Party Gaming's image after it was forced to suspend its gambling interests in the U.S. in the wake of the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act (UIGEA), which was signed into law by U.S Congress last October. The UIGEA prohibits financial transactions to and from gambling companies and its implementation resulted in falling share prices and a mad scrabble by many online gambling firms to decline to offer services to U.S. casino fans.
Insiders speculate that the reason behind Party Gaming's willingness to co-operate with the U.S authorities and seek clarification on its position is due to several potential deals the firm is involved in. In particular, analysts have cited Party Gaming as an attractive option for American companies looking to gain a share of non-U.S gambling markets. MGM and Las Vegas Sands are just two large U.S firms that could be interested in purchasing Party Gaming. If the firm is able to prove that its status prior to the introduction of the UIGEA was not illegal, it stands to enhance its desirability in the eyes of several potential buyers which also include Yahoo and Google.
