Big Names Dip Out at World Series Event

Daniel Negreanu, Phil Ivey, Josh Arieh and Joseph Hachem are just some of the poker world’s big names that fell by the wayside in the attempt to become this year’s World Series of Poker winner. By Sunday night, only 45 players remained of the original 8.773 that stated the tournament and of the 135 players that made it to the weekend’s final rounds.

However, while the dreams of many poker stars have been shattered, the rewards players have reaped in just making it into the final rounds have been anything but paltry. Sean Johnson, the last player to bow out in Sunday’s final round, picked up over $164,000 for his troubles.

Jamie Gold is currently holding off the competition in the number one spot with a chip count of $7,330 000. His closest rival in second place is Eric Friberg on $5,905 000.

Play resumes at noon in Las Vegas on Monday. The lucky winner of the tournament will take home over $12 million dollars and each finalist at the final table is predicted to clear $1 million.
