The Main Event Prizes of the World Series of Poker Make Big News

Last year the winner of the World Series of Poker Joe Hachem, took home an amazing $7.5 million. But that's nothing compared to the projected prize for this year’s winner – a whopping $12 million. This is obviously a major increase of approximately sixty percent. But it's not only the grand winner who succeeds big time this year in making the big bucks. It is projected that everyone of the leading contenders will walk off with at least a million big ones. In fact, as many as 873 players who are able to hold out in the Main Event will win a prize. The smallest will go to winner number 873, and it is projected to be $14, 597. Still a nice return of close to 50% of the required $10,000 "buy-in" fee.

The following lists the top twelve winners and the amounts that they will win:

The first place winner will receive the grand prize of $12 million
The second place winner will receive a sum that is still more than half that of the first place winner, or $6.1 million
The third place winner will receive a figure that is more than a third of that received by the grand prize winner, or $4.1 million
The fourth place winner will receive well over a quarter of what is received by the first place winner, or $3.6 million
This is also true for the fifth place winner who will also win over a quarter of the amount that will be won by the first placed winner or $3.2 million
The sixth place winner will win a bit less with a still substantial prize of $2.8 million
The player in seventh place will win $2.3 million
The player in eighth place is slated to win $1.9 million
The ninth place winner will win a still substantial prize of $1.5 million
The tenth place winner wins $1.1 million
And the eleventh placed winner wind the same amount of $1.1 million
As does the twelfth place winner whose prize is projected at $1.1 million

A record 8,773 players have joined into the event having paid the substantial buy-in fee creating a projected prize pool of an impressive $83.5 million. This number of players establishes a new record. It represents a substantial improvement of the number who entered the previous year, or 5,619 players. This is an amazing improvement over the initial World Series of Poker in which only thirty-eight players participated.

WSOP commissioner, Jeffery Pollack states that this turn-out is in fact the best that the series has experienced in its thirty-seven years of existence. He says that never before in the past have as many people from all parts of the world come together to compete and to win great prizes and share the potential honor of achieving the most coveted award in all of world poker, and that would be the bracelet worn by the World Series of Poker champion.

At the time that this article was written, the process of elimination was operating at top level. In the sixth day of the competition main event, contests were truly going at it. There were 1,541 players left of the total record number of entrants, 8 773s.

Included were such professional big names as the defending champion, Joseph Hachem, and others including Kathy Liebert and Daniel Negreanu, who were constantly at it, playing boldly the stressful and exhaustive hours. By this time some other players including 2004 Champion Greg Raymer, and Huck Seed had already been removed from the competition.
