World Champs of Online Poker Set to Break Records
PokerStars, the organizers of the fifth annual World Championship of Online Poker (WCOOP), are getting ready to host players from 80 countries this year. Over 18 tournaments are planned after the event kicks off on September 16, allowing poker fans all over the globe to compete for the guaranteed prize pool of $10 million. Organizers are hoping this year’s tournament is even more popular than last year’s. The 2005 WCOOP tournament series featured over 19,000 competitors and boasted $12 783 900 in prize money. Last year’s success also helped to make the tournament the third largest online tournament in the world. But why the sudden interest in poker competitions?
According to Team PokerStars spokesperson Barry Greenstein, poker tournaments are the best way for players to improve their game. “Prestigious tournaments such as the PokerStars.com WCOOP are the ultimate way to improve your game and experience the excitement of big tournament play,” he says. “The WCOOP is a popular event with the established stars of online poker, and the H.O.R.S.E. tournament is bound to attract the elite.” This year’s event will commence with a Seven Card Stud Low tournament with a buy-in of $200. 16 other tournaments will then run through the next 16 days, ending with the $2,500 buy-in No-Limit Hold’em tournament. Players in the final tournament will compete for prizes of up to $3 million dollars. Also not to be missed is the debut appearance of H.O.R.S.E., a tournament consisting of five different poker varieties that are rotated between players. Some of the online poker world’s top performers are expected to try out the tournament to showcase their talents.
