Chinese Government to Consider Legalized Gambling
Pacific Net’s chief executive officer, Tony Tong, stands much to gain if the People's Republic of China decides to adopt a different approach to online gambling. Traditionally, China’s government has been vehemently opposed to the industry and has adopted harsh measures against individuals and organizations accused of gambling offenses. However, according to Tong, this hard-line attitude may be about to change. China’s government currently reaps over 40 percent in taxation from legalized gambling activities in the province of Macau. In Tong’s opinion, the lucrative nature of gambling could induce the government to legalize it in other parts of China, and may even lead to the licensing of companies in China itself. Pacific Net, which designs and manufactures baccarat machines, offers Chinese gamblers live action via video stream. Instead of random number generators, a live dealer dealing live hands is used to create an authentic and real-life baccarat experience. Another firm hoping to expand into the lucrative Chinese market is GigaMedia. The Taiwanese firm is the owner of Canada’s Grand Virtual, which is a leading poker software seller. GigaMedia also offers the largest Mahjong site available on the internet, which has proved a popular destination for Chinese online gambling fans.
