Online Industry Prepares for Lay-Offs
A report in Israeli business magazine Globes has suggested that retrenchments may be imminent in traditional online gambling havens like Antigua and Gibraltar. The rumors were fuelled following reports that Random Logic, a subsidiary of Israeli-owned 888.com, is due to let 29 employees go from its research and development centre. The firm, based in Tel Aviv, currently employs 435 staff. Its decision to let 29 go will effectively slash seven percent of its workforce.
Random Logic’s parent company, 888 Holdings, is also expected to announce its plans to downsize in the wake of unfavorable U.S. legislation. The company’s 150 employees in Antigua and the 350 in Gibraltar understandably have cause for concern. In a recent statement to Globes, 888 Holdings confirmed that “in light of the change of legislation in the U.S and the cessation of the company’s activity in that country, 888 is making general structure and workforce changes.” A spokesperson for the firm added that some employees whose duties included daily liaison with the U.S. have been “integrated into international departments.”
