Senator Frist Online Gambling World's Next New Opponent
Bill Frist is the latest in U.S. Senate members determined to ban online gambling in all its forms. Frist’s vociferous nature was revealed by the Associated Press, which recently reported that the Tennessee Republican seems to have taken a leaf from Senator Jon Kyl’s book and has attempted to attach anti-gambling legislation to unrelated bills in the Senate, Frist has also been linked with a bill that proposes to give authority to U.S. military in Iraq and Afghanistan to prevent individuals from settling gambling debts via their credit cards. Frist’s aim is to attach anti-gambling legislation to a Defense Department authorization bill. According to one anonymous aide, the Senate has already passed a bill that would severely hamper the online gambling industry in the U.S. However, the bill would not extend to curbing the activities of financial institutions. Enter Senator Frist and his new found zeal for confronting the online gambling industry head-on. The Tennessee native, widely rumored to run for president in 2008, recently discussed his opposition to gambling while in Iowa. Frist is fully supportive of a total ban on online gambling, referring to it as a legislative priority in a recent speech to the Senate. Some of Frist’s supporters include the National Football League and several other sporting groups. Religious, social action and charitable organizations are also in favor of the bill, while horse-racing and lottery organizers are reportedly against Frist’s latest bill.
