Alexander First Nation to Regulate Online Gambling
While lawmakers in Ontario haven’t yet given up on the idea of banning online gambling advertisements, the Quebec province is gearing up to become the next new thing in gambling. Quebec is home to the Alexander First Nation, a Native American tribe determined to rival fellow Native Americans the Kahnawake First Nation Mohawks in being the top dog in the Canadian land-gaming industry.
The Kahnawake First Nation Mohawks in Quebec province boasts no less than 300 online gambling brands. However, stiff competition is expected from the Alexander First Nation, which has pledged to regulate the companies it licenses under the tribe’s sovereign rights.
The Alexander First Nation made headlines in 2002 after it was awarded 63 million dollars by the Canadian government in settlement of a claim dating back to 1905. An estimated 9,518 acres of the tribe’s land was appropriated by the Crown. The majority of the compensation for loss and damages was subsequently placed in a trust to ensure that future generations of the tribe are able to reap the benefits from the landmark settlement.
According to a spokesperson for the Alexander First Nation, the tribe is about to offer online gaming licenses to those operators that adhere to the tribe’s basic standards. Among the criteria operators will have to meet is to prove that its games operate under strict codes of fair play and do not penalize casino players in any way. Winners must be paid out in a timely fashion. These rules will apply to all online casino and online poker ventures operating out of the Alexander Gaming Commission’s jurisdiction.
