Reports this week in the Associated Press have confirmed those published by online gambling portal Gamling911 of a raid in New York City against an online sportsbook. More than two dozen individuals are facing prosecution in relation to a multi-million dollar illegal online gambling operation.
The unconfirmed reports were solidified following an announcement from the Queens District Attorney’s Office spokesperson, Kevin Ryan. Ryan confirmed that one of the corporations implicated in the gambling sting is an offshore internet firm that operates in the U.S. with a twin company. The District Attorney’s Office statement read that the case is “...one of the first times that a Web designer corporation and the companies that maintain the Web sites have been charged.”
At the press conference, Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly and District Attorney Richard Brown presided over a display including cash and assets seized in the raid. Among these are jewelry, sports memorabilia and valuable works of art. Ryan told journalists that the arrests made in the raid, which involved the District Attorney’s Office and the New York Police Department, are the first under the new Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act passed by U.S. Congress last month.

Ryan also said that arrests have been carried out in four states in connection with the online gambling operation. “We have initiated a $500 million asset forfeiture case," Ryan said, although he declined to name individuals or corporations.

The charges follow an international investigation on online gambling in the U.S. that has been ongoing for the last two years.
