"Online Gambling"
For some gambling is an occasional indulgence,
for others, a hobby, and for still others, gambling is an addiction.
Addicted gamblers are now being treated to a new form of gambling,
Internet gambling, and it is just as addictive as traditional forms
of gambling. For a perfect example of how Internet gambling can fuel
a gambling addiction, we can look at the state of Iowa where casinos
are popping up everywhere. As a result, the number of problem gamblers
is growing as well along with the growing number of Internet gambling
sites, (in particular those cashing in on the poker craze sweeping
the country and the globe). These Internet gambling sites are also
contributing to the swelling numbers of gambling addicts. In 2005,
almost 2000 people have called the gambling hotline in Iowa so far,
which is a 43 percent increase from last year. In fact, at one gambling
website alone, 69,000 people were found playing Texas Hold ‘em – currently
the most popular form of poker on the planet.
Unfortunately, Internet gambling means easier
access to gambling venues and easier access means that the number of
young people gambling is on the rise too. Consequently, as more young
people begin to gamble we also begin to see more young people with
gambling addictions. In other words, problem gamblers are no longer
limited to the forty-something crowd. Fortunately, there are help centers
for people with gambling addictions and Iowa alone has ten gambling
treatment programs, in addition to the state’s help line. If
you or anyone that you know is seeking help for a gambling problem,
the number to call for to receive help is 1-800-BETS-OFF.
