“Online Gambling on the Rise
in Europe”
The online gambling bug seems to be a global phenomenon
and Europe is no exception. Recently released findings
from the Internet research company, Neilsen/NetRatings,
indicate a 45 percent increase over last year in online
gambling in the UK. In Feb. of this year alone, over
three million UK Internet users logged onto an online
gaming site. Europe is following this trend with an astonishing
14 million players having logged on to an Internet casino
in February. The French and the Swedes are leading the
European pack when it comes to accessing online gambling
sites, while the Spanish and Italians are the most reticent
about the activity.
As a result of the increased availability of hi-speed
Internet connections and the enhanced variety of games
and prizes being offered at online gambling sites, analysts
at Neilsen/NetRatings are predicting that even greater
numbers will soon be playing at Internet casinos. In
the UK, for example, 75% of the visitors to online casinos
use a broadband connection, which increases the speed,
comfort, and convenience of Internet gambling.
The most visited Internet gambling site in the UK is
the National Lottery, which logged over 1.3 million entries
in February alone. The William Hill sports betting site
and PartyPoker.com were next in line popular gaming sites
visited by UK players.
