"Online Recreation"
The Web, one of the fastest growing technological phenomena of this
century, is used for not only business purposes, but for entertainment
and recreational purposes as well. In fact, the majority of Web users
see the Web as a source of fun and opportunity to enjoy personal pursuits.
According to The Pew Internet and American Life Project, an estimated
seventy million adult Americans are online on any given day. Many activities
that were normally done off line, such as checking the weather forecast
or catching up on the latest news, are now done online by nearly two
times as many people as did so in the year 2000. Moreover, the numbers
continue to rise. The market for paid content is growing, with sites
collecting 1.8 billion dollars in revenue in 2004. The sites that account
for the largest revenue earned are dating sites. Second to the dating
sites are entertainment sites such as music and movie downloading sites.
Surprisingly, these sites still come in second to the dating sites even
though they saw a ninety percent increase in revenue in the year 2004.
These market figures, however, do not take into account, the number
of users visiting pornography and gambling sites, two other significant
sources of revenue generators. Because of the difficulty of monitoring
these types of sites, an accurate read of their revenue generating potential
is difficult, but when Nielsen/NetRatings monitored site visits among
a panel of surfers, they found that 24 percent visited pornography sites
and 18 percent visited Internet gambling sites. Given this information,
it comes as no surprise that there are more than 2000 million Internet
porn sites and the online gambling market is expected to exceed 24 billion
dollars by the year 2010.
