"China Hits Net Gambling Hard"
In China’s ongoing effort to stem the
growing Internet gambling trade within the country, Chinese law enforcement
agencies detained more than 1,300 people in Shanghai involved in Internet
gambling. The raid also targeted private homes, net cafes, and nightclubs,
where Chinese authorities believed Internet gambling was taking place.
This was not the first raid on Internet gambling
operators in China. Earlier, in the month of January, six hundred people
involved in online gambling were arrested and CNY23m (1.5m pounds)
were seized. Also, approximately 220 people were arrested in a series
of raids on a “clandestine
Internet-based gambling company”. Chinese officials claim that
the Taiwan-based gambling business has been working with known Chinese
criminals for almost a year now. In fact, in the most recent raid, two
of the people arrested out of the 1,300 are on China’s national “most-wanted” list
and are know to have ties with illegal online gambling businesses.
